The St. Louis Metropolitan Area
The broader St. Louis metropolitan area (including St. Louis City) is home to about 2.2 million residents, a 0.14% increase from 2020.
The area has several world-class museums including the St. Louis Art Museum, the History Museum, and Contemporary Art Museum and unique attractions such as the City Museum, the World Chess Center, Missouri Botanical Garden, and the St. Louis Science Center. We are home to professional sports teams, the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Blues, and a soon-to-debut professional soccer club. The Gateway Arch, park, and museum are free for everyone.
St. Louis has a thriving music scene that includes the world-class St. Louis Symphony, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Jazz St. Louis, touring Broadway musicals, and contemporary concerts. The Grand Center Arts District comprises a number of eclectic music, dining, and media events.
Forest Park, the nation’s largest city-owned park, contains our beloved zoo, which is free and known for its high level of animal research, and walking, biking, and hiking trails, a golf course, and restaurants.
Educational resources rank among the best in the nation, with five major universities: Washington University, Saint Louis University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Webster University, Maryville University, and several colleges, public and private. St. Louis County and St. Charles County both have highly ranked community college systems and technical studies programs.
We are fortunate to have several well regarded medical centers and medical schools including Barnes-Jewish and St. Louis Children's Hospitals, Mercy Health System, St. Luke's Hospital, Washington University Medical School, St. Louis University School of Medicine, and training for allied health specialties. All attract students from surrounding communities and across the globe who often choose to stay in the area to practice.
